Flavia Machado

Flavia is a professor of intensive care and chair of the intensive care session of Anesthesiology, Pain and Intensive Care Department at the Federal University of São Paulo in São Paulo, Brazil. She has been working with the Latin America Sepsis Institute (LASI) since its foundation in 2005. LASI is devoted to the quality improvement process and knowledge translation in Brazilian hospitals as well as to coordinating multicenter studies in the sepsis field. She is a member of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign International Guidelines committee since its 2012 version and her main role is to give a low and middle-income countries (LMIC) perspective. She is a member of the Executive Board of the Global Sepsis Alliance (GSA), an international organization aiming to raise awareness about sepsis, and also a member of the Executive Committee for the World Sepsis Day which the main objective is to include sepsis in the World Health Organization agenda. She is involved in the foundation of the Quality Improvement Committee in GSA, in which members of different countries want to build a comprehensive repository with resources that have been successfully used in other quality improvement projects in sepsis care in different settings including LMIC. She has published more than 180 papers and is highly experienced in both clinical and research teaching in these settings. She is also a member of the Executive Committee and Scientific Committee for the Brazilian Research in Intensive Care Network (BRICNET), a network of young healthcare professionals involved in high-quality research in Brazil, and a member of the Latin America Intensive Care Network (LIVEN) comprising members from different countries in Latin America. Her involvement will focus on low- and middle-income settings as she is highly skilled in education and knowledge translation in these conditions as well as in the engagement of LMICs networks.
