Konrad is recognized as an international champion of Sepsis. He is the Founding President of the Global Sepsis Alliance and the key initiator of World Sepsis Day. He was a member of the Council of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive & Critical Care Medicine from 2008-2013. In Germany, he is a member of the German National Academy of Science Leopoldina and Chair of the Sepsis-Foundation. He was the Founding President of the German Sepsis Society and its president from 2001 - 2009. As speaker of the nationwide German research network SepNet he initiated landmark studies on the efficacy and safety of therapeutic approaches in sepsis as well as on the epidemiology of sepsis in Germany. He was initiator of the Center for Sepsis Control & Care (CSCC) at Jena University Hospital. His research activities in the field of sepsis and intensive care medicine led to more than 750 peer-reviewed publications and the Research Award of the Federal State of Thuringia/ Germany. He is Senior-Professor for Sepsis Awareness and Advocacy at the Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin and BIH Visiting Professor supported by the Charité Foundation. His publicly funded research is focused on quality improvement of sepsis management and long-term sequelae of sepsis.
